Consider the three basics

Let’s start with the basics. Before you rush to finding the perfect lamp shade for your hallway or bedroom, take some time to consider the source of lighting you actually need. After all, different types of lights attempt to solve one problem: setting the right mood. To do so, you have to understand the three basic types of lighting usually seen in a home: ambient, task and accent lights. What’s the difference you ask?

As the name suggests, ambient lighting is used to create an ambience in a given room. To set the mood right, think of using basic lighting fixtures such as chandeliers, track lights and other ceiling lights. Task light, on the other hand, is more concentrated and illuminates a particular focal, such as your bathroom, the desk or the kitchen counters. Common types of task lights include pendant lights, table or desk lamps and under-cabinet lighting. And finally, there is accent light. Used to highlight a specific feature in your home, this type of lighting will also add some serious style and drama. Common types of accent light include wall lights, spotlights, recessed lights and even candlelight. Don’t just go for one but instead combine all three types for a good lighting design and illuminate any area, according to function and style. Ready to start shopping?
